Randall James Longcore II died on Aug. 16, 2024, from illnesses related to aging while at the Englewood Post Acute and Rehabilitation Center. Randall was born Feb. 19, 1936, the first son of Ray R. and Rachel M. (Brown) Longcore, in Alpena. He attended local schools during 1941-43, completing grades three and four in one year. As a member of the Safety Patrol, he was awarded a trip to Washington, D.C., for saving the lives of the Pake brothers from a vehicle that failed to stop for the bus that was discharging them. Randall attended Alpena High School and graduated as class Valedictorian in 1953. With several financial, academic awards, including University of Michigan Regent-Alumni Scholarships, he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1957 and a Master of Science in 1959, both in Mathematics, from the University of Michigan. Following two years as an Associate Systems Engineer at Sperry Gyroscope in New York, Randall volunteered in 1961 with the United States Peace Corps and served until 1963 as Project Administrator in charge of the University of Nigeria Peace Corps Project in Nsukka, Nigeria, West Africa. Back in the U.S., he continued to serve as a Mathematics Instructor for the Peace Corps Training Program. Later in 1965 he earned a Master of Arts degree in the History of Science from Harvard University. Randall was a dedicated educator and teacher of Mathematics and most of his recent years were spent tutoring students at the Community College of Denver and at Arapahoe Community College also in Denver. While serving as a Mathematics Instructor and Tutor at the Community College of Denver he obtained an Associate of Arts, and an Associate of Science degrees in 1996. Randall was an avid reader who wrote and enjoyed poetry and painting still life. Randall is survived by his sisters, Lila Apsey, Escanaba, and Carol Evans, Midland; brothers Calvin (Carolyn), Kalamazoo, and Jerry (Joyce), Orono, Maine; sister-in-law Constance Longcore, and several nieces and nephews. Randall was proud to be the Godfather to his niece, Cherie. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Keith Edward Longcore. His final resting place will be Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery, Maple Ridge Township, Alpena County. Randall's family appreciated the care provided by staff of the Rehab Center and by members of Compassus Hospice. Randall benefited greatly from his longtime friend and conservator, Colin "Kelly" Killion, who responded graciously to Randall's needs and requests. Barbara Johnston was a dear Peace Corps colleague. A local memorial service to be held later in Colorado is pending. Memorials may be directed to the Colorado Center for the Blind.
