Clinton Adolph Kirchoff -- the father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, we loved so deeply died early Tuesday morning Aug. 27, 2024, at MyMichigan Medical Center – Alpena. We've lost the irreplaceable leader of our family and the joyous light in our lives. However, the inspiration of Dad's faith, optimism, perseverance, wit, and his one-of-a-kind sense of humor will live on in our hearts forever.
Dad was born on Jan. 17, 1931, in Alpena, to Hilda and Adolph Kirchoff. He graduated from Alpena High School in 1949 and then served two years in the U.S. Army. While in the service he decided to explore a few European countries on his own. He especially enjoyed Germany, an important part of his heritage. In 1952, he married the love of his life, his soulmate, our beautiful mother, Winnie Wieschowski. She preceded him in death in 2014.
Dad sailed for the National Gypsum Company in Alpena for 44 and 1/2 years, starting out as a deckhand and working his way up to a wheelsman then first mate. He sailed on all the Alpena cement boats, but the majority of his years were spent sailing on the Iglehart, and of course, his preferred ship, the Paul H. Townsend. Dad had interesting and sometimes harrowing tales to tell of his many years on the lakes. He was very well respected and much loved by the crew and lifelong sailing friends.
Music was in Dad's soul. He played the accordion and piano starting from the age of 12 and shared his gift of music throughout his lifetime playing at nursing homes, weddings, music halls, Polish festivals, and several honky tonks. Music and fun absolutely consumed our home whenever Dad was "off the boat." These cherished memories will remain in our hearts forever.
Dad leaves behind three children, Gary (Leslie) Kirchoff, Sue (Rick) Suszek, both of Alpena, Audrey (Pat) Chambers, of Norton Shores, grandson Chad Kirchoff (Amanda) grandchildren, Elijah and Vivien Kirchoff of Ada, step-grandchildren Janine Suszek of Alpena, Adam Suszek (deceased), and his beloved brother, Melvin Kirchoff of Leer.
Dad's soul is now with his eternal father in heaven where he is "as free as a breeze, doin' as he pleases, just a bummin' around". His body is at McWilliams Funeral Home where friends may call on Friday, Aug. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 31, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church from 10 am until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Shipman officiating. In lieu of flowers please send donations to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or Leer Lutheran Church.
