Harlo Henry Domke, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2024, in Herron, Michigan, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on Oct. 26, 1945, in Alpena, Michigan, Harlo's life was marked by a profound dedication to his family, his country, and the community he held so dear.
Harlo's journey began as the beloved son of Sieghard and Anna Domke, and he grew up with a close-knit family, which included his sister Darlene and his late brothers Myron, Raymond, Brain, and late sisters Myra and Rhea. After completing high school, he answered the call to serve his country and joined the United States Army, an experience that instilled in him a deep sense of duty and pride.
Upon returning to civilian life, Harlo met and married the love of his life, Katherine. Together, they built a life full of joy and purpose. Their family grew to include their son, Henry, daughter-in-law Jennifer, and their children Jacob, Vella, and Jared. Their daughter, Holly, blessed Harlo with his granddaughter, Cortney, and he had the joy of becoming a great-grandfather to Zeigherd Pearce. His sister Darlene and her husband Jack Stoinski also survive him, and they shared countless fond memories over the years.
Harlo's work ethic was unparalleled, both in his service to his country and in his civilian life. He was known for his ability to fix just about anything. Harlo's love for the outdoors was evident to all who knew him. His passion for hunting, fishing, and farming was more than just hobbies; they were a testament to his appreciation for nature and the simple pleasures of life.
He was a regular figure at the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2496, where he formed lasting friendships and found a community of fellow veterans. His involvement with the VFW was a source of great pride and camaraderie, and his contributions to their initiatives were invaluable.
Harlo's garden was a labor of love, and he took immense pleasure in tending to his plants and sharing the fruits of his labor with friends and family. His infectious laughter and warm, friendly demeanor made him a joy to be around, and he was always the first to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Harlo is at McWilliams Funeral Home where family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday, June 29, 2024, from 3 p.m. until the time of service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Leslie Nye officiating. Online condolences may be registered at www.mcwilliamsfh.com.
