ELAINE JEAN KINGSBURY

ELAINE JEAN KINGSBURY
Oct. 8, 1939 – May 31, 2024
Elaine Jean Kingsbury, a beacon of love and faith, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2024, in her hometown of Alpena, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on Oct. 8, 1939, to the late Erling and Naomi (Burzlaff) Bernson, Elaine’s life was a vivid tapestry of dedication, joy, and service.
Elaine’s journey began as a bright-eyed girl in Alpena, where she grew to become a woman of strength and character. After obtaining an associate’s degree from Alpena Community College, she embarked on a fulfilling career that included roles as a secretary and a parts sales associate at Besser Co. Her meticulous attention to detail and warm demeanor made her a favorite among her customers.
In 1960, Elaine’s heart found its match in Jerry Rousseau, with whom she lovingly raised three children: Lee (Roberta), Mike (Sonie), and Susan (Terry). The family was Elaine’s pride and joy, and she supported them with every fiber of her being. Elaine would again find love once more and married Vern Kingsbury Jr. in 1982, further enriching her life’s journey until his passing.
Elaine’s spirit of service shone brightly through her volunteer work at the local hospital, where she devoted countless hours to helping others. Her faith played a central role in her life, and she was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. There, she actively participated on several committees as well as the church quilt guild, sang in the choir and eagerly contributed to the yearly bazaar, sharing her talents and warm heart with the community.
Family was the cornerstone of Elaine’s world, and she cherished every moment spent with her nine grandchildren; Douglas (Stacy), Rachael, Zac (Kaitlynn), Hunter (Fiance Chelsea), Bailey, Mathias, Amber, Robert (Jamie), and Krystal, and several great-grandchildren. She celebrated their achievements, supported them through challenges, and was a constant presence at their sporting events, always their most enthusiastic cheerleader.
Elaine’s brother, Roy (Janet) Bernson, and her sister-in-law, Arleta Bernson will fondly remember her as a loving sister and friend. Her nieces and nephews, too, will hold dear the memories of her wisdom and the solutions she always seemed to have at the ready for any problem. Elaine was preceded in death by her beloved husband Vern, her brother Lee Bernson, and her parents.
A woman of many interests, Elaine had an enduring love for the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings, often cheering them on through both victories and defeats. Sewing was not just a hobby but a passion, as she created beautiful pieces that reflected her artistry and care. Her connection to nature was evident in her stunning flower gardens, which brought joy to all who beheld them.
Travel was another of Elaine’s pleasures, and her adventures took her to the plains of Kenya and the scenic landscapes of Norway, among other places. Each journey was an opportunity to embrace new experiences and create lasting memories.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, June 4, at McWilliams Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. Visitation will resume on Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Shipman officiating. Memorial donations can be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Hospice of Michigan.
