Thomas Edward Cassell, 85, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2024, after a brief illness.
Tom was born in Alpena on July 9, 1938, son of Angeline (nee' Nowicki) and August Cassell.
He attended St. Bernard Elementary School and Alpena High School and graduated in 1956. While in high school, Tom excelled at football. He attended Alma College, where he continued playing football and later attended Ferris State College. Tom was quick to tell stories of his time playing football for Bob DeVaney.
Tom was a tool and die maker for many years, working his trade in Detroit, Texas, and St. Louis. In later working years, he changed professions and trained as an interstate truck driver, which allowed him to fulfill his wish to see the United States,
He was an avid hunter, woodsman and fisherman. Upon his retirement to Alpena, he was able to continue his love of the outdoors and would never pass up the opportunity to go to camp. He was a long time member of the Alpena County Sportsman Club Winter Pistol League and vice president of the Alpena RC Airplane Club.
Tom is survived by his sister Mona (Glenn) Doyle and his brother John Cassell, his nephews, Phillip, Patrick (Wendy) and his niece Katherine (Duncan) Gray. He was preceded in death by his parents and his special friend, Marilyn Sharp.
The family wishes to acknowledge the commitment of his close friends during his last illness as well as the care given during his stay at Medilodge and the My Michigan Medical Center.
