THEODORE PETER POKORSKI

THEODORE PETER POKORSKI

April 11, 1948 – April 22, 2024

Theodore Peter Pokorski, 76, entered his eternal home on April 22, 2024, at Alpena. Born on April 11, 1948, in Alpena. Theodore, affectionately known as Ted, was the eldest of Theodore and Rose Pokorski’s seven children. Ted lived a life that touched many and he will be sorely missed.

Ted had fond memories of his early youth growing up in Detroit, but his life was forever transformed when his family relocated to Silo View on Long Lake. Ted and his siblings enjoyed countless adventures, instilling in him a lifelong love of the outdoors.

After graduating from Alpena Catholic Central, Ted served in the US Navy and was deployed to serve in the Vietnam War aboard the USS Valley Forge. He always carried a deep pride in his military service.

Upon his return, Ted married the love of his life, Gloria (Taratuta). He would often tell people that Gloria was the best thing that ever happened to him. He considered her not only his life partner but also his dearest friend.

Ted eventually pursued his passion for aviation by working as a flight instructor, a role that held special significance for him. He forged enduring connections with his students, many of whom remained lifelong friends.

Following his time as a flight instructor, Ted embarked on a career spanning 34 years at the Upjohn company. His trajectory within the company was a testament to his work ethic and initiative. Ted progressively assumed various roles in the company while attaining his undergraduate degree and MBA before ending his career as Global Director of Facilities.

In retirement, Ted’s final and favorite role was that of grandfather. He cherished the opportunity to offer both example and counsel. Ted shared his love of nature with his grandchildren, introducing them to activities such as hunting, fishing, and morel hunting. And he treasured moments spent with Gloria, tending to their orchard and engaging in forest management together.

Known to his family as the ‘energizer bunny,’ Ted lived life to the fullest. With boundless energy, he would only relax once he completed his ‘checklist’ for the day. Those tasks often involved utilizing his carpentry skills and offering a helping hand to his children on any project that arose.

Ted loved connecting with people and paired that with community involvement by being involved in Rotary International, the Kalamazoo Airport Board of Directors, the Knights of Columbus, and various church committees. His commitment to making a positive impact touched the lives of many.

Throughout his life, Ted remained a devout Catholic. He firmly believed that Christ’s example of compassion, forgiveness, and sacrifice offers salvation not only for the individual but also for society at large. Ted strived to embody these virtues to the best of his ability.

The last few years of Ted’s life were marked by his battle against brain cancer. Despite this considerable challenge he continued to exemplify the virtues that defined his life – positivity, charity, love, and humor.

Ted is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gloria. He is also survived by his daughter, Heidi White, her daughter Olivia; daughter, Gretchen Reid and her husband David, along with their daughters Abigail and Rebecca; and son Theodore Xavier (Teddy) and his wife Erika (Simonsen), along with their children Theodore Josiah (TJ), Anthony, Maria, Daniel, Xavier, and Naomi.

Siblings Richard (Dr Cheryl Ruby), Michael (Theresa), Daniel (Sherry), John (LeAnn), Rosemarie, sister-in-law, Karen. He was preceded in death by his brother Patrick.

A celebration of Ted’s life will be held on Monday, May 6, at the Bannan Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. with military honors accorded him by VFW Post 2496 at 5 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at St. Anne Church of All Saints Parish on Tuesday, May 7th from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with the Rev.
