MICHAEL JAMES JACKSON

Oct. 10, 1950 – April 2, 2024

Michael James Jackson passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 2, 2024, in Alpena, at the age of 73. Born on Oct. 10, 1950, in St. Clair, Mike was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend whose generosity and warm spirit touched the lives of many.

Mike was the cherished son of the late Orville and Bertha Jackson and grew up in a lively household alongside his siblings Terry (Libby) Decker, Patsy (John) Drake, Bart (Jan) Jackson, Linda Kay Alexander, and the late Gary Decker. He found the love of his life in Susanne, and together they created a beautiful family that included their children Tammy Jackson-Parker, Josh Jackson, Tony (Amy) Jackson, and the late Nichole Jackson.

A proud veteran, Mike enlisted in the Air Force in 1974, serving as a security specialist with a canine team. His dedication to service was a hallmark of his character, a trait that he carried into his civilian life. After his military tenure, he pursued his passion for automotives, becoming a graduate of the automotive tech program at Alpena Community College. Mike turned his expertise into a successful career, working as a mechanic for over 25 years and eventually owning and operating Mike’s Auto, where his integrity and skill earned him the respect and trust of the community.

Mike’s zest for life was evident in his myriad of interests. He was a true outdoorsman who relished canoeing and fishing. His commitment to helping others shone brightly through his involvement with the Relay for Life cancer awareness walk, his charity work raising funds for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and his efforts to support Operation Holidays through the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA). As a founding member of the VVA Chapter 583, Mike’s dedication to his fellow veterans was unwavering.

Every year, without fail, Mike made the pilgrimage to Kokomo, Indiana, to participate in the Vietnam Veterans Reunion, an event that held a special place in his heart. Closer to home, he was a devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers and Lions, bringing his family and friends together to share in the thrills and spills of the games.

Mike was a doting grandfather to Terrance Sladek, Andrew Sladek, Caleb Parker, Zacharee Parker, Nicholas Jackson, Jaidyn Jackson, Bishop Jackson, Deacon Jackson, and Phoenix Jackson. He also delighted in the role of great-grandfather to Finn Sladek, Kai Sladek, and Leilani Sladek. His love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew no bounds, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

Family will receive friends on Saturday at McWilliams Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 3 p.m. with Deacon Michael Roy officiating. Memorial donations can be made to Operations Holiday in care of VVA Chapter 583.
