Marvin Jay McDonald, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on Jan. 18, 2024, at the age of 80 with his loving family at his side. Born on Dec. 9, 1943, to the late Angus and Minnie (Anderson) McDonald, Marvin’s life was a testament to the values of hard work, family, and service.
Marvin’s early years in Alpena were filled with the love and camaraderie of a large family. He was preceded in death by his beloved son Trent and his siblings Roy, Jack, Glen, Pete, Ron, Jim, Eugene, Francis, Shirley, Betty, and Arleen. He is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 48 years, Sally (Jaskolski) McDonald, whom he married at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alpena on May 15, 1976. Their union was blessed with two children, Aaron (Greg) Dolliver and Lee McDonald, who in turn gave Marvin the joy of being a grandfather to Breck, Rylan, MacKenzie, and Darbi, and a great-grandfather to Sylas. Marvin’s sisters, Irma and Janie, along with sisters-in-law Betty and Peggy, also hold dear memories of Marvin’s kindness and gentle spirit.
Marvin honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, an experience that shaped his lifelong commitment to his fellow veterans. He was an active member of the VFW Post 3890 and the Vietnam Veterans, where he found solace and camaraderie with those who shared his experiences.
After his military service, Marvin returned to Alpena and embarked on a successful career. He owned and operated McDonald Trucking, where his reputation for reliability and integrity was well-known. His industrious nature also led him to work at Alpena Steel and Wire for many years, where his colleagues respected him for his dedication and leadership.
