Elwood Dorr went to be with his Lord and Savior on Jan. 2, 2024.
Born to William Roy and Gertrude Dorr in Alpena on Feb 26, 1931. He had three brothers and two sisters: Wesley, Gerald, Stewart and Helen (all deceased) and Donna Wade (surviving).
He graduated from Alpena High School in 1949, then attended Alpena Community College and went on to get a BA in Business from Michigan State University in 1957.
Elwood worked in Management for the W.T. Grant Company until the late 1970s and then ran the family-owned “Big D” restaurant in Carson City until retiring in 1996.
Elwood spent his retired years feeding and enjoying the deer on the family’s hunting property near Lakeview. The family lived on Indian Lake just north of Grand Rapids from the 1970’s through 2018 and now reside in Elk Rapids. Elwood’s hobbies included hunting, fishing, golf, and carpentry.
Elwood married the love of his life, Gail Marie Dowling on Dec. 29, 1956, and they had six children together: David Lee (married to Julie), Douglas Stewart (married to Jennifer), Mary Jo Tuori (married to Tom), and Daniel James, (all surviving) and Ann Denise and Jan Marie (deceased).
Elwood and Gail also share 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and more than a dozen great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial visitation will take place on Saturday at Bannan Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until the memorial service at noon with Deacon Michael Roy officiating. Military honors will be accorded him by Alpena VFW Post 2496.
