Dwight Franklin Sell, 92, of Alpena passed away at home Friday, Jan. 5, 2024. Born on July 20, 1931, in Seminary, Kentucky, Dwight was a man whose life was characterized by service, dedication, and the gentle love he showed to everyone he met.
Dwight’s early life in Kentucky laid the foundation for a lifetime of hard work and commitment. Upon graduating from high school, he answered the call of duty and enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. His military career was marked by discipline and distinction, retiring as a Tech Sergeant, a testament to his dedication and skill.
After 21 years of military service, Dwight embarked on a second career that saw him sailing the Great Lakes with Huron Portland Cement for 20 years. His love for the open water was only matched by his dedication to his work. Following this, he transitioned to auto transports for Hudson Motor Sales, where he remained for over a decade, showcasing his adaptability and work ethic.
Dwight’s personal life was as rich and full as his professional endeavors. He married the love of his life, Genevieve, on May 19, 1956, and together they embarked on a journey that would span nearly seven decades, filled with love, laughter, and shared memories. Their family grew with the addition of their children, Darryl, who married Patricia, and Casandra Mott, who both brought immense joy to Dwight’s life.

Dwight was a beloved brother to Mareeda Gibson, Lucy Kempling, Noreen Sell, Joel Sell, and Dee Fournais. He was also a cherished uncle to several nieces and nephews, who will fondly remember his kindness and gentle spirit. Dwight was preceded in death by his parents, the late Roy and Eula (Davison) Sell, his sister, Beatrice Sell, and his son in-law, Mike Mott who he now joins in eternal peace.
An avid walker, Dwight took great pride in having walked the Mackinac Bridge over 17 times, a feat that exemplified his love for his home state and his dedication to staying active. He was a regular at his local McDonald’s, where he could often be found enjoying a meal and the company of friends. A loyal fan of Tigers baseball, Dwight never missed a game, cheering on his team with the same steadfast support he gave to all his endeavors.
Dwight’s involvement with the church was a cornerstone of his life. His faith was unwavering, and he dedicated countless hours to serving his church community, embodying the loving and gentle nature that he was known for.
Dwight is at McWilliams Funeral Home where family will receive friends on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024 from noon to 2 p.m. Military honors will be accompanied by VFW Post #2496 and the U.S. Air Force beginning at 2 p.m. with the funeral service immediately following with the Rev. Marlon Smith officiating. Memorial donations can be made to Gideons International. Interment: Great Lakes National Cemetery
