MICHAEL THOMAS MADDEN

Michael Madden

Feb. 3, 1935 – Dec. 14, 2023

Michael Thomas Madden passed away peacefully on Dec. 14, 2023, in Alpena. Born on Feb. 3, 1935, in Cheboygan, Michigan, to the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Dore) Madden, Mike was a beacon of kindness and love throughout his 88 years of life.

Mike grew up in a warm, nurturing home alongside his siblings. He is survived by his brother, Thomas (Susan) Madden, his sister, Liza (Bill) Sandall, and was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis, and sisters, Ann and Virginia. He was a cherished figure in his family, a loving father to Susan (Mark) Strickfaden and Janet (Michael) Jenkins, and a doting grandfather to Steven Strickfaden, Brendan (Molly) Jenkins, Erin (Logan) Hutson, Christie (Ben) Reis, and Maria (Nick) Cameron. His joy was further multiplied by the presence of his seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maryann Piaskowski, with whom he shared a devoted marriage from 1958 until her passing in 2016. Mike’s heart would eventually hold a special place for Judy Nordstrand, his significant other, who was by his side, sharing in life’s adventures and quiet moments alike.

Professionally, Mike made his mark as a purchasing agent for the Alpena County Road Commission before managing at Motion Industries until his retirement. His leadership skills shone brightly as he served as president of the Kiwanis Club, the Alpena Golf Association, and the Alpena Country Club. His athletic spirit was evident from his youth, having been a letterman in football during high school.

Mike’s passions were manifold. He found joy in the companionship of his Jack Russell terriers — Scooter, Skeeter, and Popcorn. His love for golf was well-known, as were his winter retreats to Florida, which provided a warm respite from Michigan’s chilly winters. An avid scrapbooker, he preserved memories with meticulous care, each album a testament to the rich life he led and the people he cherished.

A devout Catholic, Mike served as an altar server at St. Bernard Catholic Church and recited the Rosary daily, his faith a guiding light through all seasons of life.

Family will receive friends on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023 at St. Anne Catholic Church All Saints Parish from 9 a.m. until the time of the memorial mass at 11 a.m. with Fr. Aloysius Okpala as celebrant. Memorial donations can be made to the Huron Humane Society or the Alpena Senior Center. Arrangements have been entrusted with McWilliams Funeral Home.
