Leroy Edward Schenk, 81, died peacefully on Dec. 10, 2023, surrounded by the caring staff of Besser Assisted Living and Hospice of Michigan. He was born in Evansville, Indiana on Sept. 12, 1942, to the late Alvina (Weiss) and Florian Schenk.
He graduated from Mater Dei High School in 1960. After graduation, he served in the United States Air Force where he was stationed at Wurtsmith Airforce Base in Oscoda, Michigan.
Upon discharge from the service, Leroy married Carol (Dohn) Schenk on Feb. 1, 1964. At that time, he started working at Abitibi-Price Corp, where he worked for 35 years before retiring in May of 1999.
Leroy was a member of Alpena Golf Club and its Men's Association, Alpena Elks Lodge #505, Fraternal Order of Eagles Alpena Post, Dusk Til Dawn Game Preserve, Evansville's VFW, Evansville's Order of the Owls Nest #30, the Mater Dei Alumni Association, the Evansville Lunch Gang and he served on the Credit Committee of the Wolverine Credit Union.
When Carol was alive, they enjoyed traveling. They spent many vacations enjoying everything that Las Vegas has to offer, or, the many all-inclusive resorts they traveled to. Because they were both avid golfers, they spent lots of time on the golf course together, even sponsoring a golf outing or two.
Surviving are his daughters, Marcie Walcott and Bonnie (Harry) Mytko; grandson, Tate (Heather Rundell) Precord; siblings, Mary (Jim) Brown, Darrell (Julie) Schneider, Brenda (Keith) Brame, and Linda (Daniel) Goebel, sister-in-law Carolyn Schenk.
Leroy was preceded in death by his wife Carol, his brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Donna Schenk, brother Florian ("Jr") Schenk, and brother Randy Schneider.
Leroy is at McWilliams Funeral Home where visiting hours will be held on Dec. 14, 2023, from 4 to 8 p.m. Visitation will resume on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Leslie Nye officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family extends a very warm thank you to the staff at Besser Senior Living as well as Hospice of Michigan for their exceptional care. In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to Hospice of Michigan or the American Cancer Society.
