Dr. James R. Bullen, 79, passed away due to complications from pulmonary fibrosis on Dec. 17, 2023. Born Dec. 6, 1944, to the late Robert and Addie (Keesler) Bullen and raised in Mason, Mich., Jim began his esteemed medical calling at Albion College followed by a doctorate at University of Michigan Medical School and postdoctoral training at Henry Ford Hospital. Following medical school, he enlisted in the United States Navy reaching Lieutenant Commander in the Medical Corp. Jim joined his Henry Ford friend and colleague Dr. Donald Miller along with Dr. Henry Stibitz in Alpena as a partner at Alpena Internal Medicine.
For nearly five decades, Jim served as a dedicated and beloved practitioner in the Alpena area. Following retirement in 2023, Jim spent his time listening to blues music, catching up with old friends, and perfecting his cat whispering skills with the family felines, Dusty and Mooney.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years Cecelia, son Bob and his husband Gerald Karpo, son-in-law, Brad (Lynley) Sieve, grandson Vonn Sieve, grandson-in-law, Quin, and nephew Rick Harlow.
Preceding him in death were his daughter Heather and sister Janet Harlow.
At Jim’s request, no services will be held following cremation. A life-long pet and animal lover, Jim asked that any memorials be made to the Huron Humane Society. Arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home.
