Don Oliver

Don Charles Oliver died peacefully on Dec. 6, 2023, surrounded by family and the caring staff of Touch of Country and Hospice of Michigan. He was 87.
He was born in Jacksonville, Florida on July 15, 1936, to parents Merle and Ella Oliver. The family moved to Plymouth, Michigan where he finished high school.
He attended the University of Michigan, graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in Geology. As a member of the university Reserve Officers’ Training Corp, he was commissioned as an Infantry Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. He went on to serve 10 years in the United States Army Reserve, achieving the rank of Captain.
He was at Michigan Technological University working on graduate studies when he was recruited by the National Gypsum Company in 1962 to eventually become the Alpena plant geologist. He made the transition with the LaFarge Corporation during their acquisition of the plant. He fulfilled many roles over a 40-year career that included plant geologist, lead computer programmer for process control, and safety and environmental engineering. Upon retirement in 2001, Don continued to support the plant for more than 10 years, providing plant tours and educational seminars to visitors.
Don was a long-time resident of Black River. He loved farming and spent every free moment outdoors. He was very proud of his herd of polled Hereford cattle and raising them was a life-long hobby.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Sally Ann Oliver (formerly Carpenter), daughter Katherine, son Robert, daughter-in-law Amy, grandson Connor, brother Brian, and sister-in-law Bertha. Don was preceded in death by his brother Theodore.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to Hospice of Michigan. Cremation arrangements have been made by Bannan Funeral Home.
