WILLIAM CHARLES TOWNSEND
William Charles Townsend
Jan. 24, 1930 – Nov. 17, 2023
William Charles Townsend, 93, of Alpena passed away Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, at Medilodge of Alpena.
William was born Jan. 24, 1930, in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Boyd and Helen (Paul) Townsend. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War ’51 to ’53 as an MP at Fort Bragg. On June 18, 1955, he married Mabel Liske. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
In his younger years, he was a sportsman, small game hunter, loved to go fishing with his son, brothers, and friends. He was very proud of the 32″, 18 lb. German Brown Trout he caught. Bowling was a sport he enjoyed well into his 80s and he could really “knock ’em down.” He and his wife took many road trips in their retirement with friends or by themselves. He enjoyed bird watching.
He passed along his love of life, the outdoors, and family to all of us who were blessed to have him in our lives. He was a lover of all things sports, if there was a ball or puck being tossed around he was watching it.
Surviving are his wife, Mabel; daughter, Nancy Broderick; son, Thomas (Marie) Townsend; four grandchildren, Brian (Lori) Townsend, Jamus (Laura) Lapczynski, Danielle Broderick, Christopher Broderick; four great-grandchildren, Drew Lapczynski, Reagan Lapczynski, Morgan Caldwell, Max Townsend; three brothers Theodore (Katy) Townsend, Edward (Bonnie) Townsend, Roy (Loretta) Townsend; two sisters, Helen Gohl, Gail (Jon) Schultz; and sister-in-law, Norma Hackstock.
Mr. Townsend was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Joseph Broderick; brothers, Charles Townsend, Boyd Townsend Jr.; and brother-in-law, Bill Gohl.
Memorial visitation will take place Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, at St. Paul Lutheran Church-Alpena from noon until the memorial service at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John Shipman officiating. Arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home.
