Aug. 12, 1937 – Nov. 14, 2023

Mary Ann LeTourneau, age 86, went to be with our Lord, Nov. 14, in Lillington, North Carolina, at the home of her daughter, Maureen Smith. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Mary Ann was born in Alpena, Michigan on Aug. 12, 1937 to Gerald and Loretta (McDougall) LaLonde. She was a 1955 graduate of Catholic Central High School. The secretary of her senior class and captain of the cheerleader squad, her motto was “Be prompt. Be good.” Which is ironic, because she was good at being late. She attended Siena Heights University from 1955 to 1959 earning a Bachelors of Arts. She married the late Gerald LeTourneau June 18, 1960. They were married for 18 years. Mary Ann taught second grade for Ella White Elementary School in 1960-61. She resigned as a teacher to become a homemaker and raise their four children. She held a variety of jobs, including working at LaLonde Shoe Store, vocational and technical training of adults with disabilities, substitute teaching, working for Alpena Senior Citizens Center, home health care, where she was trained in hospice care, retiring after 25 years of service. She was a volunteer teacher of catechism for St. Bernard’s Church. Mary Ann then focused on bringing joy and color into her grandchildren’s lives through her many hobbies, such as watercolor art, playing the ukulele and singing. She enjoyed poetry, calligraphy, Bible study, watching Tigers baseball with her dear friend Joanne, traveling to visit her many friends and family. She practiced amateur meteorology, keeping her family updated on the current weather situation, no matter how many states away the events occurred.

She is survived by her four children, Joe (Donya) LeTourneau of Ohio, Steve (Julie) LeTourneau of New Mexico, Maureen (Mark) Smith of North Carolina, Jane (Steve) Bailey of Alpena, brother-in-law Mike McGirr of Florida and Alpena, grandchildren Stephany and Daniel LeTourneau, Nicole and Blair Smith, Gabrielle (Jearrod) Fountain, Garret and Erin Bailey, great-grandchildren Oden and Zoey Jabo and baby girl Fountain, due in March, many cousins, nieces, nephews and Godchildren. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald (Bud) and Loretta LaLonde, sister, Carole McGirr and grandchildren Justin and Dylan Bailey.

The family will have a graveside memorial service at Holy Cross Cemetery, Alpena, Michigan in July 2024. Details will be announced at a later date.
