Joan V. Powers, 87, of Alpena, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2023 at Turning Brook of Alpena.
Joan was born on Dec. 28, 1935, in Rogers City to the late Herman and Evelyn (Karsten) Vogler. Joan graduated from Rogers City High School in 1953 and would later marry Donald G. Powers on Jan. 22, 1955, at St. John Lutheran Church in Rogers City. Joan helped Don as he served as a lay minister to many of the area congregations covering pastoral vacancies. She was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she served as the LCMS Michigan district representative. Joan was also a charter member of the Alpena General Hospital Auxiliary.
Joan is survived by her children, Paul (Donna) Powers, Janine Birmingham, four granddaughters, Sara Armstrong, Casey Wood, Toni (Shane) Posluszny, Alexandria (John) Poag, four great-grandchildren, Alaina and Maclyn Wood, Liam Armstrong, and Julianna Poag, and her brother, Jason Vogler. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Donald Powers, her grandson, Trevor Powers, her son in-law, Brad Birmingham, two brothers, Herman Vogler Jr., Neil Vogler, and her sister, Ruie Pines. The family extends a special thank you to the staff of Turning Brook for their exceptional, loving care of more than seven years.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023 at McWilliams Funeral Home from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Jim Erickson officiating.
