Leon F. LaMay, 88, passed away Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena.
Leon was born July 26, 1935, in Alpena to the late Hilton and Aziel (Byers) LaMay. He married Barbara Jean Jones on Oct. 23, 1954. Leon liked working in his yard and taking little trips to casinos. He retired from National Gypsum and Lafarge in 1991. Leon spent three years in the United States Army with 15 months during the Korean War leaving with the rank of Sergeant.
Leon was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 2496 and a lifetime member of the Military Order of the Cooties PT.96 where he was Past Seam Squirrel. He was in the Post Honor Guards for several years. In 2010, he was elected Veteran of the Year.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara; three daughters, Diana (James) LaMarre, Delynn Frary, Tamyra (John) Hall; son Jeff (Veronica) LaMay; eight grandchildren, Kristopher Carter, Jason (Martha) Frary, Melissa Hall, Bradley Frary, Jessica LaMay, Alysha LaMay, Rebecca Hall, Jeffery LaMay; eight great-grandchildren, Emma, Josh, Andrew Fray, Jonathon Mulholland, Isabella Frary, Caitlyn Mulholland, Alex Frary, and Mavis Ta. Also surviving are a sister, Lucille Habermehl; brother David (Judy) LaMay; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Leon was preceded in death by brothers, Robert LaMay, Donald LaMay, Fred LaMay; sisters, Elaine Vanwagoner and Deloris Rembowski.
Memorial visitation will take place Tuesday at Bannan Funeral Home from noon to 2 p.m. with military honors accorded him by Alpena VFW Post 2496 at 2 p.m.
