THOMAS GRANT SMITH

Thomas Grant Smith (a true American treasure) of Alpena, Michigan died, Saturday, July 22, 2023, at the age of 90 in his home surrounded by family. Thomas was truly an amazing man! The most honest and kindest person you could ever meet. Thomas was a Judge for 30 years, in Westland Michigan, where he reimagined a probation program to give people a second chance at life. He coached little league, umpired, taught CCD classes, volunteered, and he went to every event of his eight kids. He was a Marine during the Korean War and an Intelligence officer at Quantico in Virginia where he met his wife, Barbara Ahlstrom, of 68 years in Washington DC where she was working at the USO. She preceded him in death on March 20, 2022. He was a National High School 4×1 mile record holder out of Mackenzie High School in Detroit. He was President of the American Judges Association, President of the PTA, Board of Governors, North American Judges Association, Nominated Outstanding Citizen of Westland 1970 and 1971, YMCA Executive Board member and much-much more. He attended Catholic mass regularly and was a huge supporter of the church. Above all he was a man of honesty, integrity, love of family, country, and God. He was a great father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He was a great American! He will be sorely missed.

Thomas is survived by seven of his eight children, Michael, Scott, Mark, Kurt, Denise, Daniel, and Matthew, 25 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, his brother Paul Leonard Smith.

Thomas lost his oldest daughter Debbie (to cancer early in life), and brother James Lenox Smith passed away a few years ago.
