Dale Collins Manning, age 88, passed away peacefully at his home in East Jordan, Michigan on Aug. 12, 2023 surrounded by his wife and family. He was born at home on Manning Hill in Lachine, Michigan on April 20, 1935.
Dale is survived by Elaine, his wife of 66 years; his children; Diane (James) Boyer, Daniel (Darlene Stevens), and Curtis (Nona); grandchildren Joseph Ballas, Constance Manning, Loren Kellogg, Anthony Castle, Erica (Alex) Hayes, Ellen (Austin) La Count, and Benjamin (Jazzmyn) Manning; along with several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a great-great-grandchild.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Benjamin (Esther) Manning; siblings; Ellen (John) Behling, Leafa (Keith) McEwen, Annie Manning, Elydia Manning, Loyal Manning, Harold (Juanita) Manning, Oscar (Connie) Manning, Arnold (Marlene) Manning, Thomas Manning; his grandsons, Andrew Boyer and Travis Manning; daughter-in-law Pamela Manning and granddaughter-in-law, Lacie Castle.
Dale won the Alpena city sidewalk contract multiple years in the early 1970s and his company stamp can still be seen on many existing Alpena sidewalks.
His company also laid much of the Alpena Bi-Path.
Dale was also an Alpena county commissioner representing Long Rapids and Maple Ridge townships from 1976 to 1983.
Dale held a significant role in the lives of everyone he met — he taught us to value manual labor and learn by doing.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, Aug. 24, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Elm Pointe in East Jordan, Michigan.
