Sept. 19, 1936 – June 29, 2023
Harry William Sobczak, devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, and esteemed member of the community passed away peacefully on June 29, 2023. Born on Sept. 19, 1936, in the small town of Alpena, Michigan; Harry was the fourth son of Stanley Sobczak Sr. and Theresa Sobczak (Kandow), Polish immigrants who instilled in him a strong work ethic and a deep sense of familial values. He was a first-generation descendant of Polish immigrants, proudly carrying his heritage throughout his long life.
Harry’s life was intertwined with love and partnership. He shared a profound bond with his beloved wife, Constance Ann (Rogers), who preceded him in death. Together, they built a strong and loving family. Harry’s commitment to his children, Susan, Kathryn, and Michael, was unwavering. He served as a pillar of strength, imparting valuable lessons of integrity, compassion, and resilience. His legacy lives on through the remarkable individuals his children have become.
His love extended to his grandchildren: Donald Commeford, Kelley Meise (Commeford), Christian Sobczak, and William Sobczak. He delighted in their growth, happiness, and achievements all while cherishing every moment shared together. They were a source of immense pride and joy and his love for them knew no bounds.
In addition, Harry was blessed with eight great-grandchildren, who brought him much happiness and laughter. Their presence brightened his days and filled his heart with boundless love. Their joyous laughter and innocent smiles were precious gifts that he treasured dearly.
Harry’s journey in life led him to incredible experiences and achievements. He served his country with honor and distinction as a member of the United States Army, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 3 after 20 years.
His remarkable military career took him to various corners of the world. Harry’s dedication and bravery were showcased during his service in Vietnam where he exemplified the true spirit of patriotism, being awarded The Bronze Star Medal and The Air Medal for bravery.
Throughout his military career, Harry was stationed in Europe, Korea, and various locations across the United States, but it was in Colorado Springs where he found a place to call home. He settled there and made lasting memories for the past 52 years, cherishing the breathtaking beauty of the mountains, fishing the clear mountain lakes and defying gravity on the black diamond slopes of the high ski country. His community activities are too numerous to list. Let’s just say his wife, Connie kept him busy!
In the later years of his life after his dear Wife’s passing, Harry found companionship and love with Mary Sanford of Sumner, Washington. Mary was not only his travel companion but also his confidant and a source of joy. Harry departed this life with Mary by his side. She holds a special place in the hearts of the Sobczak family, and they are eternally grateful that Harry’s last years were filled with adventure, love, and a zest for life.
Harry’s unwavering faith played a significant role in his journey. He was a devoted member of Divine Redeemer Catholic Church, finding solace and guidance in his deep connection with God. His faith was not simply a personal endeavor but a commitment to actively engage with his community.
Harry’s involvement extended to the Mercy Center, where he found fellowship and a sense of purpose. Through community activities and selfless service, he embodied the teachings of compassion and love that his faith instilled in him. His dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of others was evident in his unwavering commitment.
As a Charter Member of the reconstituted Council 4699 of the Knights of Columbus, Harry’s passion for service and his faith merged seamlessly. He embraced the principles of the Knights, channeling his energy and dedication into their noble mission. To say he was merely active in the Knights would be an understatement. His level of involvement and commitment surpassed expectations, leaving an indelible mark on the organization and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Harry’s spirituality was reflected in his generous heart. He had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and adventure. He loved to travel and explore the world, leaving a trail of friendships in every place he visited. His vibrant personality and genuine interest in others drew people to him, creating lasting connections wherever he roamed.
Harry’s deep connection to his Polish heritage remained unwavering throughout his life. He held his roots dear and fostered a strong bond with his brothers, Stanley Jr., Victor, Florian, and Leo, who resided in Alpena, Michigan. Despite the distances that separated them, their brotherly love transcended time and distance.
Sadly, Harry’s beloved brothers, Stanley Jr., Victor, and Leo, have passed away before him. The Sobczak family fondly reminisce about the cherished memories and the unshakeable bond they shared. The stories, laughter, and shared experiences will forever hold a special place.
Harry’s memory lives on in the hearts of those he leaves behind. He is survived by his elder brother, Florian Sobczak (affectionately known as Flip), who shares a deep bond of brotherhood; his loving partner, Mary Sanford, a source of joy and companionship; his longtime neighbor and best friend, Marie Henderson; his three children, Susan Commeford, Kathryn Sobczak and Michael Sobczak; their immediate families and numerous decades-long friends.
As the Sobczak family gathers to celebrate Harry’s life and mourn his loss, they find solace in their cherished memories and the enduring bonds they share. Harry’s presence will be felt through the love and legacy he leaves behind. May the memories of his life bring comfort and may his spirit guide and inspire generations to come.
