GALE LEE McCONNAUGHEY

Gale Lee McConnaughey, 81, of Brownsville, Texas passed away with his wife at his side on Jan. 18, 2023. Gale was born Feb. 14, 1941 in Alpena, the son of Leonard and Lillian McConnaughey of Hillman.
Surviving is his loving wife, Mary; siblings Mary Laube and Pat (Sally) McConnaughey; stepdaughters Marie Gregg, Jennifer Gregg, and Heather (Christopher) Wech; grandchildren Ian, Lily, Jocelyn and Brendon; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Lillian McConnaughey, two sisters and their spouses, Leona (Gerald) Edwards of Hillman, and Joyce (John) Coles of Hamilton, and his brother-in-law, Curtis Laube.
Gale’s greatest accomplishment was being a loving husband, an amazing father, and grandfather. He touched the lives of everyone around him, sharing his love and passion for life and the outdoors. Gale was an avid sportsman who enjoyed every aspect of hunting and fishing. He loved to go on any outdoor adventure with minimum gear to enjoy the experience, while living off the land. He acquired many trophies through the years from his fishing and hunting adventures. Gale proudly served three years in the U.S. Army and retired from General Motors and enjoyed sharing those life experiences with others. He lived the past 16 years in Texas enjoying the warm winters while still coming home to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for the summers to spend time with his family.
The cremation was performed by Sunset Memorial Funeral Home in Brownsville.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Hillman Rust Cemetery on June 24, 2023 at 11 a.m., a lunch will be served at the VFW at 441 State St, Hillman, Michigan, 49746.
