Crystal Leigh Nelson, a loving, adventurous, and creative soul, was born on Nov. 26, 1985, in Alpena, Michigan, and passed away on March 24, 2023, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, due to cardiomyopathy. Crystal’s life was a testament to the power of love, the importance of family, and the pursuit of one’s passions. Raised by her parents, William and Diane Nelson, Crystal grew up with her sister, Maggie (Richard) Wells, in a close-knit family that valued spending time together. Crystal’s nephew and godson, Beau Wells, held a special place in her heart, and she cherished every moment spent with him. Crystal’s family also includes her grandfather, Robert Nelson, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins who have played significant roles in her life. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, George and Hazel LaBonte, and Rita Nelson. Crystal was a proud graduate of Alpena High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Oakland University. Her passion for journalism led her to work for The Alpena News and the Brighton Standard Blade Newspaper in Brighton, Colorado. Crystal’s dedication and talent as a journalist earned her several awards and recognition from both newspapers. Crystal was always investigating the “why” behind things, and her love for journalism was evident in her enthusiasm for election night in the newsroom. In her personal life, Crystal’s interests were vast and varied. She loved gardening, growing both vegetables and flowers, and found joy in the simple pleasures of working with the earth. Crystal was an avid camper and traveler, always seeking out new adventures and experiences. Her love for the Great Lakes was a constant throughout her life, and she treasured the time spent exploring their shores. Family gatherings were a highlight for Crystal, as she valued the love and support of her extended family. Crystal’s commitment to helping others was evident in her volunteer work as a travel companion for Camp Make-A-Dream of Montana, a camp for children with cancer. She herself attended Camp Quality in Boyne City. Her love for the arts led her to volunteer for the Eye for the Art Program in Brighton, Colorado, further showcasing her creative spirit. Crystal pursued her passions and interests with enthusiasm and dedication. Her loving and adventurous nature inspired those around her to seek out their own passions and live life to the fullest. Crystal’s life serves as a reminder of the importance of family, love, and the pursuit of one’s dreams. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her. Crystal’s spirit and passion for life will live on in the hearts of those she touched, and her legacy will continue to inspire others to embrace their own unique paths. Crystal’s life was a testament to the power of love, and her memory will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Memorial visiting hours will begin at 10 a.m. with the service starting at noon, Friday, June 23, 2023 at McWilliams Funeral Home with the Rev. Leslie Nye officiating.
