BARBARA IRENE POKORZYNSKI

Feb. 27, 1938 – June 17, 2023

Barbara Irene Pokorzynski, affectionately known as Barb, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2023, in her hometown of Alpena, Michigan. Born on Feb. 27, 1938, to the late Felix and Irene (Suszek) Shiemke, Barb lived a life filled with love, faith, and selflessness.

Barb is survived by her loving children, Ken (Abby) Pokorzynski, Tony (Renee) Pokorzynski, and Joe Pokorzynski. She was the proud grandmother of Aubrey, Vincent, Nicholas, Loren, Ceri, Andrew, and Jessica. Barb is also survived by her brothers, Richard (Joyce) and Michael (Kathy) Shiemke, sister Sally Beauchamp, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David, and her brothers Louis, Tom, David, Jim, and Billy Shiemke.

Barb dedicated many years of her life to working as a cook at the Grove, where she brought joy and nourishment to countless individuals. Her caring nature led her to a fulfilling career as a caregiver with Hospice, where she was honored as Volunteer of the Year for her unwavering commitment to providing comfort and support to those in need.

Throughout her life, Barb demonstrated an unwavering devotion to her faith as a devout Catholic. Her faith guided her in both her personal and professional life, inspiring her to live by the principles of love, compassion, and service to others.

One of Barb's most significant accomplishments was the loving care she provided to her husband, David, who lived with multiple sclerosis for 20 years. She remained steadfast in her commitment to him, providing not only physical care but also emotional support, companionship, and unwavering love.

In her spare time, Barb found solace and joy in gardening, and traveling.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at McWilliams Funeral Home. Visitation will resume on Wednesday at St. Anne Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Tyler Bischoff officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorial Donations can be made to Compassus Hospice.
