JEANETTE KROLL
Jeanette Kroll, a much loved and well known member of her community, a dedicated mother and grandmother, and the most loyal friend passed away April 13, 2023 in Grand Ledge, Michigan. Jean lives on through every life she touched – whether it was during her 20 years as Grandma Jean in Alpena Public Schools Foster Grandparent Program (where she often mentored generations of families), as she carried out her role of Director for the Boys and Girls Club, or serving as an active board member for NEMSCA, her desire to help others thrive will continue on.
Jean was born on May 5, 1932 to first generation immigrants, and was immensely proud of her Irish and Scottish heritage. She married William Kroll, Jr (deceased 1965) on Oct. 13, 1951. Together, they had four wonderful children: William Kroll, Jennifer Kroll (married, LaHaie), Patrick Kroll (deceased, 1977), and Mary Kroll (married, Barnes).
Jean loved golf, crafts/art, and all things involving her children and grandchildren (and later, her 25 great grandchildren). Jean loved everything about Alpena, and never let a moment go by without sharing a favorite pastime of being by the water and the sandy beaches. She could be found fishing on local riverbanks, walking along nature trails and on the pier, and visiting attractions around the city. Jean shared this love of community and nature with everyone, and served as a Youth Conservation Corps leader working all over Northeastern Michigan.
She was also extremely driven to complete her college education, and in 2012, she graduated with her Associates Degree at the age of 80. A strong believer in education, Jean was well loved by her colleagues, students, and fellow classmates in each point of her journey. She was even fondly known as Mean Jean or Jean Jean the Dancing Machine during her tenure as school security guard at Alpena High School.
Jean’s family asks that those wishing to pay respects to do so by serving your community, showing your love through art, advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves, and singing whenever you get the chance. Donations can be made to the Boys and; Girls Club of Alpena.
And, as Jean always said to those she loved, keep in touch.
A celebration of her life will be held Saturday May 20, 2023 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Suite Salon Training Center in Harborside Mall, 175 N. State Ave, Alpena, Michigan. To share memories, photos, and stories with Jean’s family, please email: celebratejeankroll@gmail.com
