ARNOLD LEE BLACK

Arnold Lee Black, 96, of Lachine passed away peacefully on May 13, 2023, at Besser Senior Living. He was born on Nov. 25, 1926, in Alpena to the late Russell and Georgina Black.

Arnold is survived by his children, Steve (Kay) Black and Jerry (Lynn) Black; his siblings, Arlington (Faith) Black, Dora Ashley, Florence (George) Moutsatson, and Harvey (Emily) Black. He was a proud grandfather to Rebecca Black (Jeff Williams), Jessica Reed (Chris Moore), Jennifer (Andy) Adrian, Mary Rose (Jason) Mast, and Andrew Black. Arnold also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and countless friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lorraine, his daughter, Susan, and his siblings, Francis Black, Helen Clark, Lloyd Black, Roy Black, Ralph Black, and Donna Smith.

Arnie was a devoted and hardworking man who spent his career as a pipefitter with UA Local 85. He was an Army veteran, having served during World War II and the occupation of Austria. His time in the service was marked by many memorable experiences, including playing baseball for the European championship team while stationed in Austria. Arnold also enjoyed sharing the unique story of how he received the phone call notifying the passing of George Patton while working the switchboard.

Upon returning home from his military service, he dedicated himself to his true passion as the owner and operator of his strawberry farm in Lachine for over 40 years. This endeavor not only provided a livelihood for his family but also brought joy to countless others who visited the farm to pick strawberries and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. He also enjoyed the tunes of Hank Williams. His love for baseball never waned, and he remained an avid fan throughout his life.

A private family graveside service at Spratt Cemetery has taken place. McWilliams Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
