George Edwin Masters Sr.

George Edwin Masters Sr., a lifelong resident of Alpena, Michigan, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2023, at the age of 91.

Born on July 28, 1931, to the late George and Madelyn (Pamerleau) Masters, George was known to friends and family as a true gem, embodying the qualities of his initials, G.E.M.

George graduated from Alpena High School and went on to serve his country in the Air Force during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he joined his father at Masters Men’s Shop, eventually taking over the family business and carrying on the legacy of providing quality clothing and exceptional service to the community. On August 9, 1958, he married his beloved wife Beverly Enger, enjoying 53 wonderful years of marriage before her passing in 2012. Throughout his life, George was an active and engaged member of the Alpena community. He was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church, was a proud member of the Doctor’s Club and the Alpena Lions Club. He enjoyed the simple things in life and had an unwavering love for people. His ever-present smile and wit were hallmarks of his personality, and he had a unique ability to see the good in everyone. George’s great sense of humor and natural storytelling abilities made him a favorite among friends and family. An avid fisherman, George loved to spend time on the water, casting his line in pursuit of the perfect catch. However, his greatest joy came from spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren whom he adored and cherished. His love for them was boundless, and he was always eager to share his wisdom and experiences with the next generation.

George is survived by his son, George Jr.; his daughters, Kathy Ingle (fiancee Don Kowalski) and Karen (Pat) Patterson; his beloved grandchildren, Tanner (Makayla) Ingle, Keegan Ingle (fiancee Veronica Klein), Miya Ingle; Mitchell (Kelly) Patterson, Duncan Patterson (fiancee Sarah VanHoute), and his great grandson, Truett Patterson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Beverly; and his sister, Jean Jacobson.

He will be remembered by all who knew him as a friendly, funny, optimistic, and kind man who enjoyed life to the fullest.

As we celebrate the life of George Edwin Masters, Sr., we are reminded of the lasting impact he had on those around him. His unwavering spirit, generosity, and love for others will live on in the hearts and minds of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Visiting hours will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Monday, April 10, 2023 from 11am until the funeral service at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Nystrom officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in George’s memory to any of the following; the First United Methodist Church, the Alpena Senior Center or Compassus Hospice. Arrangements were entrusted with McWilliams Funeral Home.
