GEORGE AUBREY HOLMES
George Aubrey Holmes died peacefully at his home on Sunday, April 16, 2023 with loved ones by his side. Born in Detroit, George was raised in Alpena, where he sharpened his skills as a consummate prankster. He continued his often irreverent sense of humor through his eight decades of life, and many of his friends were subjected to his wit, word play, and jokes. He attended Michigan State University, where he developed a deep and unrelenting love of Spartan athletics. Although George was not born in Caro, he found his way there as fast as he could. After receiving his law degree from Wayne State University, he moved to the Thumb. He was a resident and community servant of Caro for over fifty years, and was especially proud of his twenty-two years of service with the Lions basketball program, and his fifty year membership in the Tuscola County Bar Association. George loved road trips and the outdoors, and was at his happiest when sitting by a campfire, solving the world’s problems, with a friend or loved one. In his last months, he found peace sitting on his front porch watching the wildlife with his wife, Julie.
George was preceded in death by his parents George and Edith; sister, Louise; and brother, Robert. He is survived by his loving wife and partner of thirty-three years, Julie; son, Mark (Julie), daughter, Christy (Jim), stepdaughter, Miranda (David), stepson, Brandon (Kim); brother, Christian (Linda); sister, Ann (Mike); grandchildren, Ben, Harrison, Caroline, Rebecca, Caleb, Savannah, and Brenna; as well as those that comprise his larger circle of family: Marsha, Alicia, Adam, Pat, Scott, Nancy, Alexandra, Nick, Betsy, and Lex. He was proud of and loved his entire family and in his last days repeatedly reflected on his luck for having such wonderful friends and family. The family wishes to thank all who knew him for helping him live such a full and satisfying life.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 21, 2023, at the Colwood Church
