FRANCIS CARL ‘FRITZ’ STAFFORD

Francis Carl “Fritz” Stafford, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on April 25, 2023.

Born on July 27, 1933, in Harbor Beach, Michigan, Fritz was the son of the late Capt. Raymond and Lucille (Olsen) Stafford. His life was filled with love, laughter, and the pursuit of his many passions. Fritz attended Alpena High School, where he excelled both academically and athletically. As captain of his high school basketball and football teams, Fritz led his fellow teammates with determination and skill. His outstanding achievements on the field and court earned him a place in the hall of fame for both sports at his high school.

After graduating, he went on to attend Capital University, where he continued to make a name for himself in athletics. Fritz’s leadership and prowess on the basketball and football teams at Capital University also earned him spots in their hall of fame. While at Capital University, Fritz joined the ROTC, which led him to serve in the United States Air Force after college. His time in the military was marked by dedication and a strong sense of duty.

Following his service in the Air Force, Fritz began a career at Huron Portland Cement in Alpena and later in Detroit. He then transitioned into the automotive industry, working at the Wixom assembly plant until his retirement in 1991.

On New Year’s Eve of 1954, Fritz married the love of his life, Janet Stonex. Together, they raised a beautiful family, which included their children Fritz, Jr. (Michele), Ron, Laurie, and Greg (Debi). Fritz was preceded in death by his loving daughter, Mary Lou Hamer, and his brother, Jim.

He is survived by his brother Doug (Kay), his six grandchildren Rurik (Nicole) Hamer, Dustin Hamer, Jason (Heather) Stafford, Ben (Michelle) Stafford, Rochelle (Mark) Tapping, and Chelsie Stugart, as well as 13 great-grandchildren who will cherish his memory.

Fritz’s passions extended beyond his work and athletic accomplishments. He loved spending time with his family and his beloved dogs, Alfie and Trouble. After retiring, Fritz and Janet moved back to Alpena, where he reveled in the beauty of the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and spending time at his hunting camp. Fritz’s love for the water was evident in the countless hours he spent on Long Lake and the Thunder Bay River, creating memories that will be cherished by his loved ones. Described by those who knew him as passionate, wise, and loving, Fritz’s legacy will live on in the hearts of everyone he touched. His unwavering devotion to his family, his community, and his personal pursuits serve as a testament to the remarkable life he led. Fritz’s memory will be cherished by all who had the honor of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Fritz’s name to St. Paul Lutheran Church – Alpena, Hospice of Michigan, Huron Humane Society, or a charity of the donor’s choice. Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at St. Paul Lutheran Church from 12 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John Shipman officiating. Military honors will be accorded by VFW Post 2496. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. McWilliams Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
