BRUCE NICHOLSON GOODBURNE
Bruce Nicholson Goodburne, age 88, passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2023. Bruce was born in Alpena, Michigan to Raymond and Elizabeth (Capallo) Goodburne.
Growing up, he lived in both Alpena and Detroit, and then served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After serving, he attended and graduated from Michigan State University. His jobs took him to Alabama and then back to Michigan, where he eventually moved to Bay City and was the Financial Aid Director at Delta Community College.
Throughout his life, Bruce loved to tell stories about his time spent in Okinawa, Alabama, Alpena, Italy, Scotland and many other places he lived and visited. He was also very proud of his Scottish heritage and was the founding Director of Athletics for the Alma Highland Festival. As a member of the Clan MacNicol, he spent many years serving as the North American Commissioner.
After 30 years, Bruce retired from Delta College, and he and his wife, Louise, moved to his hometown of Alpena, where he spent many hours walking in the woods, enjoying nature and their house on the beautiful shore of Lake Huron.
Bruce is lovingly remembered by his sons, Stuart (Lynn) Goodburne, Matthew Goodburne, and Christopher (Ananta) Goodburne. Grandchildren: Madisson, Deiven, Hunter, Cael, and Karm Goodburne, and Colum Shutler. Stepchildren Stephen McHale, Janice (Tom) Stewart, and Karen McHale. As well as step grandchildren Michael, Andrew, Dylan McHale; Sara, Christina, Patricia Stewart; and Julie Sherwood. He will also be missed by his two wonderful sisters, Sheila Wollard and Sidney Urbanowicz. Bruce was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Goodburne, his daughter, Holly Goodburne, and his siblings, David and Ronald Goodburne, and Barb Kollien.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date, but if you’d like to honor Bruce, read a book, go for a walk, pet a dog, or wear a kilt. “May the best you’ve ever seen, be the worst you’ll ever see…”
