IRENE T. SMIGELSKI

Irene T. Smigelski, age 103, was called home to her Lord on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2022. She was born on Sept. 10, 1919, in Alpena Michigan to Joseph and Cecelia Stoppa. She graduated 8th grade from St. Mary’s School and was a life-long member of St. Mary’s All Saints Catholic Church.

On Oct. 9, 1971, she married Thomas J. Smigelski at Alpena Felician Sisters’ Convent with the Reverend Raymond Mulka officiating. Her husband preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 1975.

Irene was employed for 48 years as a factory worker at the Alpena Garment Factory, Fraser Product company, Detroit Gasket Company, and the TBG Service Incorporated. She retired on April 30, 1983.

She is survived by one brother, David W. of Alpena, three sister-in-laws; Mrs. Betty (Joe) Stoppa, Mrs. Lorna (David) Stoppa, Mrs. Margaret (Clarence) Piontkowski, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by four sisters; Rose, Vivian, Esther, and Sr. Mary Edwardine, six brothers; Edward, Ralph, Benjamin (Puddy), Joseph, Eugene (Chick), and Richard.

As a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Mrs. Smigelski was the past President of the Rosary Society, Captain of Group 17, a Eucharistic Minister for the homebound, Sacristin and Handmaid of the Altar, and member of the adult choir. She served as a past President and member of the local UAW 1280.

Family and friends will gather for visitation at Karpus Hunter & Ross Funeral Home from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022 with the Rosary Society praying the Rosary at 4 p.m. and the Parish Prayer Service beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation continues on Monday, Sept. 26, 2022 at St. Mary Catholic Church of All Saints Parish from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. when the mass of Christian Burial begins with Fr. Tyler Bischoff officiating.

Interment: Holy Cross Cemetery
