ELIZABETH L. HUGHES
Elizabeth L Hughes, 76, of Alpena, Michigan peacefully passed away near her seasonal home in New Port Richey, Florida on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2022. Elizabeth (Betty) was born on Oct. 12, 1945, in Detroit to the late Joseph P. and Elizabeth L. (Chont) Csekei. Betty spent most of her childhood at her family’s farm in Waltz, Michigan with her beloved grandparents and cousins.
Having graduated from Western Michigan University and started a master’s at the University of Michigan she began teaching in the Detroit area. Eventually moving to Alpena with her first husband. She started teaching at Alpena High School, where she was known to her students as Mrs. Eby. She taught English, worked with the Boys & Girls Club of Alpena, and led High School girls on several trips like to Washington D.C.
During her time at Alpena High School, she met Patrick Hughes. The two were married on May 29, 1981. Pat and Betty later moved to the Flushing area, where she continued her teaching career in the parochial schools, retiring in 2005.
Betty is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother. She is survived by her daughters, Julia Hughes of Alpena, Christine (Dale) Leonard of Allegan; grandsons, Chase and Patrick Leonard; nephews Matt, John, and Jim.
A prayer service will be held at Solosy Funeral home in Lincoln Park on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022, from 10-12 p.m. with a lunch following at the Hungarian Rhapsody. Memorial visitation will take place on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022, at St. Augustine Catholic Church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with the Rev. James Siler officiating. Cremation arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home.
