RONALD MERVILLE SMITH

Ronald Merville Smith, 89, of Alpena, passed away Sunday, July 10, 2022, at Besser Senior Living Community.

Ronald was born Jan. 27, 1933, in Herron, Michigan to the late Merville and Clara (Lancaster) Smith. On Aug. 1, 1953, he married Norma Jean Munroe and shared 67 years before she preceded him in death on July 29, 2020. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and worked at Alpena Power Company, retiring in 1993.

Ronald was a member of First United Methodist Church, Alpena Booster Club, VFW Post 2496, Buckhorn Hunting Club, and Friends Together. He was an avid fan (maybe not always happy) of the Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, and MSU basketball. The family would like to thank the Besser Senior Living Community staff for the care and friendship shared for the past two years.

Surviving are four children, Rick (Denise) Smith, Lori (Gary) Conard, Beth (Tim) Buse, Jodi (Brent) Herman; eight grandchildren, Jacquelyn (Wei-Yand) Lin, Brynne (Joe) Masotti, Chelsea Conard, Anna (Matt) McCalpin, Jennifer (Curt) Newhouse, Jeffrey (Terra) McDonald, Alexa Herman, Breanna Herman; 10 great-grandchildren, Harper, Tannah, Gianna, Andrea, Addie, Wes, Clara, Colin, Ashliegh, Zach; sister, Audrie Rensberry; brother, Terry (Beverly) Smith; and sister-in-law, Therese Weed.

Ronald was preceded in death by siblings, Shirley Wallace, Roger Smith, and Shelby Alexander.

Visitation will take place Thursday at Bannan Funeral Home from 2-7 p.m. with military honors accorded him at 6 p.m. by Alpena V.F.W. Post 2496. Visitation will continue Friday at First United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Nystrom officiating.
