GENE TUNNEY COLBY
Gene Tunney Colby, 94, of Alpena passed away Friday, May 20, 2022, at Touch of Country Care Home.
Gene was born in Hubbard Lake to the late Lawrence and Anna (Johnson) Colby. Gene served in the United States Army during the Korean War and retired from the City of Alpena Water Department. He will be fondly remembered by his seven nieces and nephews as the uncle who could fix anything. Gene built a cabin on the Thunder Bay River where the family spent many happy hours. He later endowed the “Colby Plant Preserve” to the Michigan Nature Association so that it would be preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. He was a lover of nature, friend to animals and an avid/determined gardener.
Surviving are his sister-in-law, Carolyn Colby; seven nieces and nephews, Thomas (Lisa) Colby, Larry Colby, Mary Hale, Linda (Foss Tyghe) Colby, Barbara Greene, Bob Greene, Meredith Smith; and close friends, Jackie and David Leavesley.
Gene was preceded in death by his siblings, Eunice Colby, Helen (Robert) Greene, Warren (Marilyn) Colby, and James Colby.
Memorial visitation will take place on Monday, June 6, 2022, at the Bannan Funeral Home from 11 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Herb Kitzman officiating, followed by military honors by VFW Alpena Post 2496.
