RUTH (RHODE) DeWYRE
Ruth (Rhode) DeWyre was born March 4, 1921. She was proud to have reached her 100th birthday! Living alone until a recent fall, Ruth was admitted to MediLodge for the last month of her life. Born to Garnet and Agnes (Probst) Rhode in Centreville, Michigan. Ruth was a hard-working young lady as she helped her parents on the farm after they moved to Sturgis, Michigan.
Graduating from Sturgis High School in 1939, Ruth then decided to become a nurse and entered nurse training in South Bend, Indiana. In 2004 she attended her 65th class reunion. During the end of her nursing training a friend introduced Ruth to an Army soldier named Bill (William) DeWyre. They were married on Nov. 11, 1944. A few years after Bill was released from the service, they purchased a farm in Hawks, Michigan. That farm in Hawks was where they raised their active family of five children: Jim, Mike, twins- Larry and Terry, and Judy. Rogers City hospital was one of the hospitals Ruth worked as a nurse, 25 years and Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo for 10 years as a surgical nurse. Finally, Ruth moved to Alpena, Michigan to be near family and enjoyed many years here. She is a member of Immanuel Lutheran church and for a time was part of their quilting group. Ruth also knitted and crocheted and never gave up her love of making pies. Her oldest grandchild, Tim DeWyre was a recipient of many of those delicious pies. She was an avid Detroit Tigers fan.
Ruth leaves behind her children, James (Linda) of Alpena, Michael (Joy) of Wisconsin, Larry (Karen) of Rogers City, Judith Lincoln of Vicksburg, daughter-in-law Mary DeWyre of Midland, 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Betty Rhode, and many nieces and nephews.
