MARILYN JANET STANDEN

Marilyn Janet Standen, 86, of Alpena passed away April 11, 2021 at home surrounded by her family. She was born to the late Capt. Donald and Irene Johnston.

Marilyn was born on June 16, 1934 and was a lifelong resident of Alpena. She graduated from Alpena High School, Class of 1952, and maintained lasting friendships with many of her classmates.

She married Howard Standen on April 24, 1956 and the two formed a sharing and dedicated partnership over the next 65 years. They always put their daughters first, and the couple were known for their sincerity and generosity in supporting their families, friends and neighbors.

Marilyn worked in the Register of Deeds Office at the Alpena County Courthouse for over 25 years, retiring in 1995 as First Deputy. She was experienced at researching complex land ownership records and transfers and enjoyed working in an office where many of her co-workers were her friends.

Marilyn was an avid reader her entire life. She loved taking care of her family and was known for making everyone’s favorite foods. She and Howard were constant companions.

A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Alpena since 1947, Marilyn volunteered her time and skills to various church offices and activities. She was recognized as having the longest number of years of church membership among the current church congregation.

Marilyn is survived by her husband Howard, two daughters, Laurie McRoberts and Kathleen (James Nahas) Standen, her granddaughter Shannon (Carlos) Vivero, and four sweet great grandchildren Zander, London, Pierson, and Irene.

Memorial visitation will take place at the Bannan Funeral Home on April 26 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church will be held on the same day at 2 p.m. with the Rev. William Rayment officiating, followed by a luncheon in the church fellowship hall. For those unable to attend, the funeral will be streamed live at bannanfuneralhome.com.
