JANE FOCHTMAN SMITH

Jane Fochtman Smith, 59, of Alpena, passed away peacefully Monday morning at home after a brief battle with cancer. Jane Elizabeth Fochtman was born in Alpena on July 9, 1955 to the late Edward and Opal (Bellinger) Fochtman. She married Robert Smith on Dec. 15, 1973; they were married 41 years and have three children together.

Jane loved her work as a real estate agent with Banner Realty and built many friendships with clients over her long career. Above all, Jane loved and adored her family, cherished summers at her cottage on Long Lake, and found great joy in making people laugh with her incomparable storytelling ability. She will forever be remembered for her vivacious humor, her undying compassion, and never being able to find her keys, phone, purse, etc.

Jane is survived by her husband, Bob; two sons, Jordan (Tonya) Smith of Des Plaines, Ill., Matt Smith of Alpena; her daughter, Meghan Smith of Harrogate, Tenn.; five brothers, Thomas (Linda) Fochtman of Ossineke; Eugene (Joan) Fochtman of Port Huron; Jim (Jane) Fochtman of Kalkaska; Michael Fochtman of Alpena, Robert Fochtman of Petoskey; two sisters, Marcia Zinger of Louisville, Ky., Pat Niepoth of Ishpeming; several nieces, nephews, and many dear friends including Mable Lund.

Jane is at the Bannan Funeral Home where visitation will take place on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. and where funeral service will take place on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Richard C. Schaeffer officiating.

Interment: Holy Cross Cemetery

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to The American Cancer Society. The family wishes to thank Hospice of Michigan for their wonderful care and support.
