DNR 2026 moose population study begins Friday

Beginning Friday, based on weather conditions and other factors, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and Northern Michigan University will resume a joint moose population study in the western Upper Peninsula to better understand the trends and challenges the Michigan moose herd faces.

Last winter, 20 moose were fitted with tracking collars. This winter, researchers plan to collar 43 moose, which will provide precise location data.

Data acquired on moose movements will help researchers understand survival and causes of mortality, pregnancy rates and birth events.

During this month’s week-long moose capture and collaring operations, a DNR team of photographers and videographers will provide daily information updates, video footage, natural sound, interviews, still images, and other materials via this link.

The dropbox currently includes photos and video from last winter’s efforts, along with articles on the study, its aims, and other updates.
