Health Students at AHS experience effects of impairment through hands-on learning

ALPENA – Students in Mrs. Johnson's Everyday Health class at AHS recently participated in an engaging, hands-on learning activity designed to help them better understand the effects of being under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
As part of the lesson, students experienced simulated situations that demonstrated how impairment can affect coordination, balance, judgment, reaction time and decision-making. The activity provided students with an opportunity to experience, in a controlled classroom setting, some of the challenges individuals may face when under the influence.
Trooper Kunath and Officer Collegnon also visited the class to present an informative discussion on addiction. They shared important information about the dangers of substance use, how addiction can develop, and the impact it can have on individuals, families and communities. Their presentation emphasized the importance of making responsible choices, understanding the risks and recognizing that addiction is a serious issue that can affect anyone.
The combination of hands-on activities and real-world information gave students a valuable opportunity to connect what they are learning in the classroom to situations they may encounter outside of school.
Mrs. Johnson expressed appreciation to Trooper Kunath and Officer Collegnon for taking the time to speak with students and provide such an important learning experience. Activities like these help reinforce the importance of education, awareness and making healthy decisions that can positively impact students’ futures.
