ALPENA -- Michigan House of Representative Cam Cavitt, R-Cheboygan, won his reelection for Michigan’s 106th State House of Representatives district. This will be Cavitt's third term serving Northeast Michigan.
In Alpena County, Cavitt brought in 8,663 votes. His Democratic opponent, Mary Hamilton, brought in 4,525 votes.
Cavitt told The News early Wednesday morning that he is appreciative of the voters that chose him for the 106th district.
"Thank you once again for trusting me," he said. "We've accomplished a lot. We still have a lot more to do."
Cavitt commented on the Democratic gains across the county, saying that he believed people were voting with their pocket books and based their decisions on kitchen table issues.
Cavitt was first elected to the legislature in 2023. He represents Alcona, Alpena, Presque Isle, and Montmorency counties as well as parts of Cheboygan and Oscoda counties.
Michigan legislators have a term limit of 12 years between the House of Representatives and the Senate. This new law was enacted in 2022 when Proposal 1 passed, amending Michigan's term limits for the legislature. Previously, legislators were able to serve three two-year terms in the House of Representatives and two four-year terms in the Senate.
Michigan State Senator Michelle Hoitenga, R-Manton, also won her race for the 36th district. She received 8,368 votes while her Democratic opponent Mark Yonkman brought in 5,165 in Alpena County. This is Hoitenga's final term serving in the state senate.
The unofficial voting results will be certified today by the Board of Canvassers, which will meet today.
