MARQUETTE - The Alpena High School volleyball team advanced to the District 1 championship with a 3-1 victory over the host Sentinels on Monday in the MHSAA volleyball district tournament.
The Wildcats, playing on the road, controlled the match behind strong offensive and defensive performances. Madelynn Cameron led Alpena with a team-high 16 kills. Lilly Rospierski added five kills, while Grace Cameron recorded three aces.
On defense, Emily VanHorn and Rospierski each had 16 digs to anchor the back row.
"The girls really battled as a team tonight," Alpena coach Kolby Andrews said. "We know what we need to do to win, and it's not going to come from just individual performances. We need every girl on the floor ready to hustle, sacrifice and execute. We got that tonight."
Andrews added that the players supported one another throughout the match.
"None of them were perfect, but they rolled into the next play and picked each other up," he said. "It was a great win. Now we look to bring home a district championship Thursday."
Alpena will face the winner of the Petoskey-Gaylord matchup in the District 1 final.
