ALPENA – The Alpena Association of Lifelong Learners has announced upcoming events for next week. Below is more information and a few details about them.

St. Vincent de Paul

Monday- 10 a.m.- 11:30 am

ACC Madeline Briggs Center 140

Saint Vincent de Paul is more than just a thrift store. Come and learn more about our programs and services. We are a community of people who care deeply about those in need. Our mission is to offer support and assistance to those who are facing tough times. All donations made to our non-profit organization help provide critical support to those in need. Through our programs and services, we’re able to help keep families fed, clothed, and safe in their time of need. Our mission is to provide a source of hope to those who may feel like they’ve run out of options.

Tom and Gerrie LaCross have been involved in all levels of the local society. We joined the SVDP organization in 1973, the first year that women were able to become members. This is a vocation for us, just like our marriage.

Writing Workshop

Wednesday 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

ACC Madeline Briggs Center 143

This writing workshop series focuses on writing, sharing, and feedback. Everyone has stories, some are told, some are written, and some, like memoirs, are written to be shared with others. Sessions will examine issues with writing, share techniques for writing and revising, and practice some editing. Participants write between sessions, share their writing at sessions, and get feedback that they can use for revising and polishing their stories.

Mary Ann Krajnik Crawford has been a personal journal writer and teacher of writing for many years. She retired from Central Michigan University as emeritus professor of English and director of the Writing Center and continues to write for the fun of it.

Puzzle of the Negwegon Rock

Thursday 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m.

ACC Madeline Briggs Center 140

Near South Point of Thunder Bay, Alpena County, Michigan, and within Negwegon State Park is a collection of inscrutable rock features. Clearly the result of human activity, the sizable stones act as barriers, though not insurmountable ones. Any person making their way through the remote area would notice them, puzzle over them, then simply continue on their way. Some of the stones are assembled in long rows, others in circular piles. They would have taken tremendous human labor to construct as the water- and sand-worn stones were hauled more than two hundred meters from the closest lake shore. The question is, why would someone go through all that trouble?

Richard D. Clute is curator emeritus of anthropology at the Jesse Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan in Alpena. His distinguished career includes serving as professor emeritus at Alpena Community College; director of Michigan Cultural Resources; visiting scholar at Huazhong University of Science and Technology; project director for the Federal Emergency Management Agency; and past president of the American Association of Community Colleges.
