Summer can collection raises $3,000 for Susan’s Wish

A summer tradition at Campers Cove RV Park & Canoe Livery continues to turn empty cans and bottles into meaningful support for local cancer patients. This past summer, Penny Barton and her son, Jonathon, collected returnable cans and bottles donated by Campers Cove guests and local community members. Proceeds benefit the Susan's Wish Fund at MyMichigan Health Foundation. This year, the Bartons returned enough cans and bottles to raise $2,400. Campers Cove owners Mark Hall and Judy Hall also contributed $600, bringing the 2026 donation for the fund to $3,000.
Susan's Wish was established by Barton and her family in memory of her daughter, Susan Yachik, who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2012. The fund helps fill gaps in traditional financial assistance for local cancer patients by providing support for expenses which insurance may not cover, such as transportation, medications, meals and lodging. Social workers at the Alpena Cancer Center help connect patients and families with assistance.
The effort has grown significantly since the Bartons and Halls began partnering to collect returnables at the campground. And, while the number of cans and bottles has grown, the need and reason behind the effort has remained the same.
"We are so grateful to our campers and to visitors who come to enjoy the Alpena area and choose to support Susan's Wish while they're here," said Mark and Judy Hall. "Their generosity is what makes this possible year after year. Every bag of cans and bottles makes a difference, and we're proud to be part of an effort that helps people in our community when they need it most."
At Campers Cove, located along the Thunder Bay River and Lake Winyah northeast of Alpena, collecting returnables has also become an opportunity to introduce more people to Susan's Wish. Barton and the Halls talk with campers about the effort and provide special pink bags for collecting returnables. Those conversations give Barton an opportunity to share Susan's story and explain how something as simple as donating cans and bottles can help someone receiving cancer treatment. Many campers are eager to participate, recognizing that cancer has touched the lives of so many families.
"Penny's commitment to Susan's Wish is remarkable, and it is wonderful to see the Campers Cove community continue to rally around this important effort," said Ann Diamond, development director, MyMichigan Health Foundation. "What may seem like a small gesture, saving a few cans or bottles, adds up when an entire community gets involved. This year's $3,000 gift is a wonderful example of how generosity can grow, and we are incredibly grateful to Penny, Jonathon, Mark, Judy and everyone who contributed."
