Scouting’s lasting impact on youth and community

By The Alpena News 0 min read
Courtesy photo Steve Donjakowski, scoutmaster of Troop 92, recently shared his knowledge and experience in Scouting America with members of the Alpena Rotary Club. Donjakowski spoke about the lasting value of Scouting for young people—both boys and girls—as well as for their families and the communities in which they live. He also discussed how Scouting has evolved over the years, particularly in response to the accelerating influence of technology and its impact on today’s youth. At one point, a Rotarian asked how many members of the group had been Scouts. Quite a few hands went up, reflecting the organization’s longstanding influence in the community. There was a general consensus that Scouting programs—and the dedicated volunteers who make them possible—continue to have a positive impact on those they serve. For youth, Scouting helps develop character, confidence and leadership skills while preparing them to take on future challenges and responsibilities. For adults, volunteering provides an opportunity to become better mentors, coaches and role models.
