ALPENA – The Alpena Lions Club is celebrating its 100th anniversary this weekend and has two events open to the public.
In keeping to its motto of "We Serve," the club is hosting a Family Fun Disco Night fundraiser at the All Saints Center of Charity, 322 W. Chisholm. All proceeds from the event will go to the Boys & Girls Club of Alpena.
Admission is $5 and is open to all ages, and gates open at 7 p.m. The fundraiser runs until 11 p.m. There will be a concession stand and a 50/50 raffle. Music will be provided by DJ Van Durst.
On Saturday, the club is hosting a community celebration at McRae Park. The club adopted the park in 2023 and has been working on making improvements.
The event begins at 11 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m. There will be games for kids, and everyone is encouraged to try out the tetherball courts installed this year. The Lions will be conducting Project KidSight during the event and offering free vision screening for kids.
The Boys & Girls Club's Youth Volunteer Corps will be collecting recyclable items; for a full list see the posting on the Friends of the Alpena Lions Club Facebook page. The VYC is also asking for newspapers to recycle and all cans and bottles that carry a deposit.
