INDIANAPOLIS - The Alpena FFA chapter in Alpena, MI has been awarded a Yearlong Living to Serve Grant in the amount of $3,000. The nationwide program provides grant money to local FFA chapters to support yearlong service-learning projects that address needs related to community safety; environmental responsibility; hunger, health and nutrition; and community engagement.

Alpena FFA plans to help address hunger and food insecurity by expanding their current Little Food Pantry.

The chapter stocks and maintains a Little Food Pantry located at the back oval of Alpena High School. This pantry is accessible to any community member in need including students and families of AHS. Last school year through the Little Pantry project members distributed over 1300 pounds of food to community members in need. This included "Meals in a Bag" that members researched recipes for and packaged all the items for complete meals to feed four or more people. Many of the distributed food items were donated by community members, area businesses such as Meijer, and through a spring Living to Serve Grant sponsored by the National FFA Organization.

Alpena FFA plans to expand the Little Food Pantry project by building an additional pantry to be placed at AHS and expanding items offered to include personal hygiene items and vouchers for meat or produce from area businesses or local farms. They also plan to host free workshops to community members on how to grow and preserve fresh herbs and vegetables.

The program provided over $158,500 to FFA chapters in 30 states. The 2026-2027 FFA Yearlong Living to Serve Grants are sponsored by Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, Cargill, and Tractor Supply Company.
