HARRISVILLE -- At 7:51 p.m. last Wednesday, the Alcona County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a vessel approximately one mile offshore on Lake Huron, possibly taking on water, after it became grounded on rocks and sand near Black River Island, according to a Tuesday press release.

Three people were rescued from the vessel.

Upon arrival on scene, a 38-foot Chris Craft vessel was located in zero to two feet of water, with three passengers on board.

The passengers were later identified as Timothea Dunagan, a 40-year-old female, and her 11-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter, all from Dayton, Ohio.

Timothea and her children were rescued without further incident. She indicated that she had recently bought the boat and was traveling to Chicago with her children.

The vessel remains grounded on Black River Island. The vessel will be removed at the expense of Dunagan.

After the water rescue was completed, Alcona Township Fire Department provided assistance to the sheriff’s boat returning to shore, and Alcona County EMS checked over the three passengers. No injuries were reported.

“It is fortunate that this incident occurred during relatively good weather conditions," Alcona County Sheriff Scott Stephenson said in the press release. "Had weather been poor, there could have been a different outcome. The Great Lakes are very unpredictable in the fall and conditions can change quickly. Poor judgment can often be deadly."

Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson let the Alcona County Sheriff's Office know that Dunagan was heading to Chicago.
