Thank you, Alpena: Community’s support of local race creates lasting impact

ALPENA – After 25 years of supporting health, wellness and local cancer care, the Aliferis Memorial Race has officially come to a close, leaving a lasting impact throughout Northeast Michigan. Over a quarter of a century, the event raised $677,883.80 to support local cancer care initiatives and scholarships for future health care professionals. Those contributions have enhanced services at the Alpena Cancer Center, expanded educational opportunities and helped ensure cancer patients receive high-quality care close to home.
Hosted by the Business Relations Committee of the MyMichigan Health Foundation serving Alpena, the final race welcomed runners, walkers, cyclists, volunteers, sponsors and spectators from around the world. Together, they celebrated the life of Dr. Peter Aliferis and the people who helped make the race one of Northeast Michigan's most enduring traditions.
A key factor in the race's success has been the leadership and dedication of the Aliferis family. For the final race, Lisa, Scott, Paul and Carlene Aliferis served as race chairs to honor Dr. Aliferis' commitment to improving the health and well-being of the community.
"Our family is deeply grateful for the incredible support this community has shown over the past 25 years," the Aliferis family said. "What began as a way to honor Peter's legacy grew into something far greater than we ever imagined. We have been humbled by the generosity, dedication and friendships that made this race possible, and we are proud of the lasting impact it will continue to have on local cancer care and future health care professionals."
The family also took part in the 5K, with Dr. Aliferis' children, Lisa, Scott and Paul, walking the course together. Nicholas Aliferis, Scott's son, represented the next generation, completing the 5K in 26:29.
The final race provided a fitting close to the competition, with strong performances across each event. Justin Karsten won the half-marathon in 1:30:32, with Henry Forde and Daniel Baker placing second and third, respectively. Angie Moughon led the women's field, crossing the finish line in 1:52:48.
On the bike course, Kobi Weiland took the overall win in 52:18, while just one second separated second-place Brad Medellin, who finished in 54:56, and third-place Clark Kent at 54:57. Angela
Hallo earned the women's overall title with a time of 59:34.
The 5K also delivered standout performances from visiting athletes. Stigmorten Fakstad of Norway finished first overall in 16:11, while 14-year-old Hailey Schultz led the female finishers with a time of 20:15. Rounding out the top three 5K finishers were Justin Karsten, who placed second, and Vincent Lussier, who finished third.
Beyond the competition, what began as a tribute to a respected physician grew into a community tradition that brought generations together while supporting local cancer care and education.
"Communities grow stronger when people show up for one another," said Ann Diamond, director, MyMichigan Health Foundation. "Every person who registered, volunteered, sponsored the event, cheered from the sidelines or made a donation played a role in its success. We are incredibly thankful for the support everyone has shown for the Aliferis Race over the last 25 years."
While the race has ended, its impact will continue through the Dr. Peter Aliferis Memorial Scholarship fund and the many improvements and advancements that the race has supported over its many years. The MyMichigan Health Foundation extends its heartfelt appreciation to long-time race directors, Joe Gentry and Barb Fox, as well as its many planning committee members, volunteers, sponsors, donors, participants and the Aliferis family whose participation made this final race extra special.
"After 25 years, countless miles and more than $677,000 raised, there is only one thing left to say: Thank you, Alpena. What a remarkable run," concluded Diamond.
