Alpena - Each year The Salvation Army provides winter wear for families in Alpena County through our "Share The Warmth" collection and distribution. Due to the economy right now, we know that the need to obtain winter wear will be increased. With all the other necessities on the forefront, winter coats and other winterwear may not seem so essential. But to those whose budget is tight it is important to know they can receive items that are necessary for the cold winters in Alpena. Here at The Salvation Army of Alpena County we aim to make sure all are protected from cold Alpena weather.
"There are always cold weather concerns in Michigan. With youth playing outside or adults walking to work, it is important that they are dressed warm and safe. We try to supply what people need and help them with the high cost these items can be with a tight budget." Major Prezza Morrison said.
Currently, The Salvation Army is collecting new and/or clean gently used coats, gloves, scarfs, hats, boots, and snow pants of all sizes. You can drop off items Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the office location at 722 N. 2nd Ave. Alpena. There is a brown bin outside the office for after-hour drop off.
The Salvation Army has provided coats for families for many years. During those years, we have distributed thousands of outer winter wear to keep youth warm. Last year we served over 250 people with over 700 items. This year we are expecting an increase due to increased need and financial concerns.
