MICHIGAN -- As the leading breast health provider in the region, MyMichigan Health is hosting special breast cancer screening events during the month of October with extended mammogram hours and special giveaways, according to a MyMichigan Health press release on Friday.
Events will take place at the following MyMichigan Medical Centers: MyMichigan Medical Center Alma on Friday, Oct. 2, from 3:50 to 5:50 p.m.; MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 5 to 7 p.m.; MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin on Sat., Oct. 10, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.; MyMichigan Medical Center Midland on Friday, Oct. 23, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.; MyMichigan Medical Center Sault on Monday, Oct. 19, from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; MyMichigan Medical Center Standish on Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m.; MyMichigan Medical Center Tawas on Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m.; MyMichigan Medical Center Towne Centre in Saginaw on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and MyMichigan Medical Center West Branch on Friday, Oct. 16, from 1 to 4 p.m.
"It is important that women, beginning at age 40, receive their annual mammogram," Heather Fennell, a MyMichigan Health fellowship trained breast surgeon, said in the release. "We are offering special screening times to make it easier and more convenient for women to schedule their mammogram, and all our mammograms use advanced 3D technology."
With 3D mammography, breast cancer can be detected at earlier stages, helping reduce breast cancer deaths, according to MyMichigan Health. This state-of-the-art technology allows a radiologist to see through the breast tissue layer by layer, providing multiple detailed slices, similar to flipping through pages of a book. This clearer, more comprehensive view increases the likelihood of finding cancer early.
MyMichigan Health recommends a yearly mammogram, as it is the only screening test proven to reduce breast cancer deaths, the release stated. Mammograms can detect cancer early, when it's most treatable. Early detection improves survival rates and may help patients avoid extensive treatment.
Appointments are required for mammograms. Those interested in making an appointment may call the MyMichigan Access Center (MAC) at (989) 633-5252. A provider's order is needed, and insurance will be billed for the mammogram.
